In death, she is preceded by her parents, Robert and Bertie Yates, her husband Robert Grandon Sr, her brother Bobby Joe Yates, Arlon Yates, and Melvin Yates. Her remaining siblings are Horace Yates, William Yates, and Allene Rotenberger.
Phyllis, Mom, Gma, Grandma Great, Mana Great (Wynter use to call her), Sister Phyllis, Sis are all names she would answer too. She was a mother first, wife, devoted Christian, friend, sister, daughter, sister-in-law, teacher, and care giver. Her love language was food! Anyone who knew her associates her with the comfort food she always made or her sweet, loving spirit.
Her youngest daughter describes her as the voice on the other end of the line giving you the comfort and care that you're missing. Even though they didn’t have much when she was younger. Mom always made her favorite food for her birthday. She would make her birthday feel special with just a simple meal. She has carried this tradition on with her own kids because of how special that made her feel. After every visit she made the grandkids laugh and feel special. She absolutely loved and cherished all of her grandkids and great grandkids to the fullest.
Our guardian angel, a woman whose sweetness touched the hearts of all who knew her. Her nurturing spirit and southern cooking created a haven of warmth and comfort for our family. Beyond the comfort food, she was a pillar of strength, always offering gentle words of love and reassurance. A true matriarch, she raised a family and created a warm home fostering a beautiful tapestry of diversity. A devout soul, she found solace in prayer, ensuring that each of her loved ones felt the embrace of her spiritual devotion. Today, we remember her with gratitude for the countless ways she enriched our lives, leaving an indelible mark of love and kindness that will forever linger in our hearts.

"Mom" was a rarity on earth...An Angel among us humans. She was warm and welcoming to all and kept a warm and welcoming home expressed through her food, her presence and genuine interest in what was going on in one's life. She was a comfort when it was needed. This past end of year ceremony my tribe had, my family made an offering plate in honor and her name was recited with all those who were called home. Her presence will be missed but she will always live on in our thoughts and prayers. Don ga'tsan go'shi ah:da'du. Don ho'i:da go'shi da:ya'du. "Travel in Happiness, All.
